In the last few months of pregnancy, the mother’s antibodies are passed to the fetus through the umbilical cord. This means that the baby is born with some level of immunity. If Ellie’s mom was bitten the day before she gave birth, the antibodies her body made to fight the infection could have been passed on to Ellie.
